70-Year-Old Man Dies after Accident along Upper Thomson Road; Lorry Driver Arrested

SINGAPORE – A tragic accident along Upper Thomson Road resulted in the death of a 70-year-old man on Friday (Jul 7). The incident involved a bus, a lorry, and a van, according to the police.

Emergency services swiftly responded to the scene, located along Upper Thomson Road towards Lornie Road, after receiving an alert at approximately 10.05 am on Friday.

Upon arrival, rescue personnel from the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) discovered the man trapped in the driver’s seat of his car. An SCDF paramedic promptly provided medical assistance to stabilize the man’s injuries, while rescuers worked diligently to free his legs, which were trapped under the dashboard. In addition, an emergency medical team from Tan Tock Seng Hospital was activated to render further medical aid.

Utilizing hydraulic rescue equipment, the SCDF successfully cut and removed the roof of the vehicle to extricate the man from the wreckage. He was conscious during the rescue operation and subsequently transported to Tan Tock Seng Hospital for further treatment. Tragically, the man succumbed to his injuries at the hospital, as confirmed by both the police and SCDF.

During the incident, two other individuals sustained minor injuries and were assessed by the SCDF. However, they declined transportation to the hospital, indicating that their injuries were not severe.

In connection with the accident, the police have arrested a 26-year-old male lorry driver on charges of careless driving causing death. Ongoing investigations will shed light on the circumstances leading to the incident and determine any additional factors contributing to the tragic outcome.

The incident serves as a somber reminder of the importance of road safety and responsible driving. Authorities urge all motorists to exercise caution and adhere to traffic regulations to prevent accidents and safeguard lives.
