In a bid to bolster diplomatic ties and enhance maritime security, three Chinese warships have arrived at the Port of Lagos in Nigeria.

Accompanied by a battalion of soldiers, the visit signifies the deepening relationship between Nigeria and China. The Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, CUI Jianchun, expressed the intention to broaden military cooperation between the two countries during a ceremony held to receive the vessels.

Ambassador CUI Jianchun emphasized that the visit of the warships demonstrates the harmony between Nigeria and China, aiming for peace not only within the sub-region but also for the international community. He highlighted the potential for collaboration between the Nigerian military and China’s PLA to overcome obstacles and deepen naval relations. The ambassador further stated that China and Nigeria would continue to work together in promoting peace, harmony, and making contributions to the international community.

Rear Admiral Joseph Akpan, the Flag Officer Commanding Western Naval Command, applauded the visit of the Chinese warships, noting that it fulfills the diplomatic role of the Nigerian Navy. He highlighted the significance of diplomatic messaging conveyed by the visit of the MSL Destroyer NANNING to Lagos, which symbolizes China’s commitment to maritime cooperation.

Admiral Akpan also mentioned the previous visits of vessels from Europe to Nigeria, emphasizing their collective efforts in assisting the Nigerian Navy in combating crimes, particularly in the Gulf of Guinea. The FOC expressed optimism regarding future cooperation and mutual benefits between the two navies, anticipating exchanges of personnel, sporting activities, and discussions on further collaboration.

The MSL Destroyer NANNING, a Type 052D guided-missile destroyer, attracted a jubilant welcome from the Chinese community residing in Lagos. The vessel, launched on February 23, 2019, at the Jiangnan Shipyard in Shanghai and commissioned on April 12, 2021, arrived alongside two other ships, the MSL Frigate SANYA and Supply Ship WEISHANHU, with a total complement of 280 crew members.
