Brooklyn, NY – A quiet Sunday night turned into a horrifying nightmare for the residents of Flatbush Gardens as a father and son fell victim to a brutal shooting, allegedly at the hands of their downstairs neighbor. Bladimy Mathurin, 47, and his 27-year-old stepson, Chinwai Mode, lost their lives in a tragic incident that has left the community in shock and mourning.
The incident unfolded at 1418 Brooklyn Ave., where Mathurin, his wife, and stepson resided. According to the NYPD, the victims’ downstairs neighbor, 47-year-old Jason Pass, is the prime suspect. The police allege that an ongoing noise dispute between the neighbors escalated into a deadly confrontation.
Disturbing video footage, which has since circulated online, captures the altercation. The footage shows Pass arguing with Mathurin’s wife in the hallway. Mathurin, holding a pair of scissors, according to the police, intervenes. In a shocking turn of events, Pass reportedly drew a gun and opened fire, fatally shooting both Mathurin and Mode. Pass then calmly fled the scene, leaving behind a community in shock and disbelief.

Police revealed that Pass had made multiple noise complaints against his upstairs neighbors, citing the sounds of footsteps as the source of his grievances. The building’s management confirmed the existence of numerous complaints from both parties, though attempts at mediation had been unsuccessful.
In an emotional interview with CBS New York, Marie Delille, Mathurin’s wife, expressed her disbelief and grief. “My husband had no gun, no weapon. Why did you bring a gun to shoot my family? Why would you bring a gun to tear my family apart? Why? Why?” she cried.
Bladimy Mathurin, a father of four, worked tirelessly to support his family, holding down two jobs as an Uber and school bus driver. Councilwoman Farah Louis, who spent time with the grieving family, highlighted Mathurin’s dedication. “He was the breadwinner of the family, paying for his wife’s education and their children’s parochial school fees. Now, they have nothing,” she lamented.

Community members, joined by anti-violence group Elite Learners, Inc., gathered outside the building to denounce the senseless violence. “We have to let the world know that this is not normal and that we have resources to support those that are in need,” said Camara Jackson, CEO of Elite Learners, Inc. The community plans to hold a prayer circle around the complex to remember the victims and stand united against violence.
As the search for Jason Pass continues, the community grapples with the devastating loss of two lives, questioning the senselessness of the tragedy that has left a family shattered and a neighborhood in mourning.
