Momika’s provocative act, accompanied by desecrating the holy book with bacon and stomping on it, drew condemnation from various quarters. The incident unfolded on June 28, coinciding with the Eid-al-Adha celebrations.

Salwan Sabah Matti Momika, a 37-year-old Iraqi national who sought refuge in Sweden a few years ago, had previously expressed his desire to burn the Quran and advocated for its ban. Under the guise of exercising his right to freedom of speech, Momika orchestrated the demonstration, intentionally targeting the large mosque in Stockholm to draw attention to his cause.

Despite the controversial nature of his intentions, a court in Sweden granted permission for Momika’s protest, citing the country’s respect for public demonstrations and opinions. However, the local police refused to authorize the Quran burnings in Stockholm, aiming to prevent further escalation and maintain public order.

The video message shared by Momika prior to the incident revealed his determination to carry out the act, calling on his supporters in Stockholm to join him both financially and emotionally. “My demonstration will take place on the 1st day of Eid. My demonstration will be in front of the big mosque in Stockholm where I will burn the Quran… My loved ones, who are living in Stockholm, and would like to participate in the demonstrations, and contribute both financially and emotionally, my information is below,” he stated in the video.

The incident has sparked a heated debate regarding the limits of freedom of expression and the appropriate response to such provocative acts. Critics argue that while freedom of speech is a fundamental democratic value, it should not extend to inciting hatred or disrespect towards religious texts or communities.

As news of the Quran burning spread, it drew widespread condemnation from religious leaders, community organizations, and individuals across Sweden and beyond. The incident has reignited discussions surrounding religious tolerance, respect, and the importance of fostering peaceful coexistence within diverse societies.

Authorities are currently investigating the incident, and it is expected that legal consequences may follow for Momika’s actions. The incident serves as a reminder of the challenges faced by societies in balancing the principles of freedom of expression and the responsibility to uphold mutual respect and understanding.
