Singer and songwriter Jimmy Buffett, known for his iconic songs and laid-back lifestyle, passed away at the age of 76. His official website revealed that he had been battling Merkel cell cancer, a rare form of skin cancer.

Merkel cell cancer is an uncommon type of cancer, as noted by the National Cancer Institute. Risk factors include sun exposure, a weakened immune system, and age over 50. This aggressive cancer tends to grow rapidly, often spreading to nearby lymph nodes and other parts of the body such as the lungs, brain, bones, and other organs.

Despite his health struggles, Buffett continued to perform, even making a surprise appearance in Rhode Island just a few days before his passing. Key West, Florida, where he was a longtime resident, honored him with a parade in his memory.

In 2022, Buffett had rescheduled tour dates due to health issues and a hospitalization, with the intention of performing in 2023. His candid remark, “Growing old is not for sissies, I promise you,” resonated with many of his fans.

Jimmy Buffett passed away at his home in Sag Harbor, New York, surrounded by loved ones. He is survived by his wife, Jane Slagsvol, two daughters, Savannah Jane and Sarah Delaney, and his son, Cameron Marley. His music and spirit will continue to be cherished by fans around the world.
