In a surprising revelation, Barbie fans are learning that the iconic Ken doll has both a middle and last name. His full name is Kenneth Sean Carson, and he was named after the son of Barbie creator Ruth Handler, who co-founded Mattel with her husband Elliot.

Ken made his debut on store shelves in March 1961, just two years after Barbie’s initial release. He was created in response to complaints that Barbie was single and needed a male counterpart.

Interestingly, Barbie herself is named after Handler’s daughter, Barbara Millicent Roberts. The fictional dolls of Barbie and Ken are recognized as lovers, but in reality, their namesakes are siblings.

The original Ken doll sported a red bathing suit and cork sandals, appearing ready for the beach. However, the real Kenneth Handler claimed to be quite different from the carefree beach-loving doll, describing himself as a nerd who played the piano and watched movies with subtitles.

The 50th anniversary of the Ken doll is this year and the Lakewood's Heritage Center 20th Century Museum has several Barbie and Ken dolls on display in their atrium. The very first Ken doll sported a red bathing suit and cork sandals, looking ready to hit the beach from the start.

Barbie and Ken hail from the fictional town of Willows, Wisconsin, and while they are a beloved toy couple, their real-world counterparts are siblings, not romantically involved.

The cultural impact of Barbie extends beyond the dolls themselves, inspiring fashion trends known as “Barbiecore” and contributing to a pink paint shortage. Moreover, the recent blockbuster hit directed by Greta Gerwig brings Barbie and Ken to life on the big screen, with Margot Robbie portraying Barbie and Ryan Gosling as Ken, along with other A-list stars and a captivating soundtrack.
