Aston Martin driver emphasizes the need for improved safety measures at Spa-Francorchamps after the tragic accident involving Dilano van ‘t Hoff
Aston Martin driver Lance Stroll has urged for immediate changes to be implemented at the Spa-Francorchamps circuit following the fatal crash of 18-year-old Dilano van ‘t Hoff during a Formula Regional European Championship race. The incident occurred on Saturday in wet conditions at the beginning of the Kemmel Straight, reminiscent of the area where Formula 2 driver Anthoine Hubert lost his life in 2019.
Stroll, speaking after the Austrian GP Sprint, expressed his deep sorrow over the tragic incident and called for enhanced safety measures, particularly at the Eau Rouge and Raidillon sections of the Belgian track.
“It’s a tragic day for motorsport. We lost a driver today, so I want everyone to think about that,” Stroll conveyed to Sky Sports F1. “My thoughts are with him today, and it breaks my heart it happened.”
Highlighting the dangers of Eau Rouge, Stroll emphasized the need for immediate action: “I think Eau Rouge at Spa needs some looking into because we’ve lost two drivers now in a span of four or five years. It’s a really dangerous corner, we say it every year, and it’s not fair what happened today. That corner has to change.”
Stroll’s concerns were echoed by other prominent figures in the motorsport community. Formula 1 world champion Max Verstappen called for a thorough evaluation of the situation, taking into account track conditions and potential safety improvements. Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff also expressed his condolences and stressed the importance of continuous safety enhancement.
The Formula 1 calendar includes the Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps later this month, scheduled to take place from July 28 to 30. With the recent tragedy in mind, discussions and assessments regarding safety measures at the circuit are expected to intensify.
The FIA (International Automobile Federation) is likely to investigate the incident and explore ways to further improve safety at Spa-Francorchamps. The aim is to prevent future accidents and ensure the protection of drivers, particularly in junior racing categories. While Spa-Francorchamps holds a special place in the hearts of racing enthusiasts, the urgent priority is to enhance safety without compromising the essence of the iconic track.
The loss of Dilano van ‘t Hoff serves as a painful reminder of the inherent risks of motorsport, prompting calls for ongoing learning and improvements to safeguard the lives of young and talented drivers.
