The decision to remove Greene follows a recent vote, which took place last month and became public through a report by POLITICO.

Representative Andy Harris (R-Md.), who sits on the board of the Freedom Caucus, acknowledged the vote and stated, “A vote was taken to remove Marjorie Taylor Greene from the House Freedom Caucus for some of the things she’s done.” Harris did not disclose his personal vote but described the action as “an appropriate decision.” When pressed for confirmation of Greene’s removal, Harris responded, “As far as I know, that is the way it is.”

Neither Greene’s spokesperson nor a representative from the Freedom Caucus provided an immediate response when approached for comment on her status within the caucus.

The decision to remove Greene from the caucus comes in the wake of escalating tensions within the group. The formal vote followed a heated altercation between Greene and fellow caucus member Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.), which occurred on the House floor. Details of the clash were quickly leaked to reporters, prompting the caucus to take action.

Harris addressed the issue, stating, “I think the way she referred to a fellow member was probably not the way we expect our members to refer to other fellow, especially female, members.” He appeared to allude to reports that Greene had allegedly referred to Boebert as a “little bitch.” Harris further mentioned that Greene’s divergence from the group on the debt bill and her support for House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy were also contributing factors in the decision. He emphasized, “I think the straw that broke the camel’s back was publicly saying things about another member in terms that no one should.”

As a consequence of her removal, Greene will no longer be able to attend the Freedom Caucus’s weekly off-campus strategy sessions. This marks the first time in the group’s history that a member has been formally expelled. Previously, then-Rep. Justin Amash voluntarily left the caucus, while another member came close to facing expulsion a couple of years ago but ultimately remained within the caucus.

The House Freedom Caucus has played a pivotal role in challenging Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s authority during his bid for the speakership and in recent debates surrounding the national debt. While these strategies did not entirely unify the caucus, Harris affirmed that following the vote to remove Greene, there are no other major divisions within the group. He remarked, “This wasn’t even a speed bump.”

As the fallout from this development continues, it remains to be seen how Marjorie Taylor Greene’s removal from the House Freedom Caucus will impact her political career and the dynamics within the conservative movement.
