In a recent statement, the Lagos State Police have clarified their actions regarding the use of teargas to disperse a crowd at the Lekki Toll Gate following a candlelit funeral procession held in honor of Mohbad. The procession had concluded at Muri Okunola Park, Victoria Island, in accordance with an agreement between the police and the event’s organizers.

Police spokesperson Benjamin Hundeyin emphasized that no live ammunition was used during the incident, and there were no reported injuries or loss of life. He stressed that the police employed crowd management best practices in handling the unruly crowd.

The agreement between the police and procession organizers had specified that the Lekki Toll Gate would be off-limits due to concerns about traffic on the Lekki-Epe Expressway. Despite this, some individuals gathered at the toll gate with intentions beyond the #justiceforMohbad initiative.

Efforts were made to peacefully disperse the crowd, with organizers using social media to communicate the conclusion of the event. However, these efforts were met with defiance, leading to the blockade of all lanes in and out of Lekki and severe traffic congestion.

In response to the escalating situation, teargas was used as a last resort after verbal and social media persuasion failed. This decision was made in line with the police’s mandate to protect lives, maintain order, and prevent crimes.

Commissioner of Police in Lagos State, Idowu Owohunwa, warned that individuals or groups disrupting the peace would be arrested and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. The police expressed gratitude to the procession organizers for their cooperation and assured residents of ongoing efforts to ensure safety and security.
