The incident occurred at a bar hosting a Juneteenth-themed event on Saturday, where the 45-year-old artist fell backward on stage.

Eyewitnesses promptly rushed to assist him before he was swiftly transported to a nearby hospital. Regrettably, Big Pokey succumbed to his condition on Sunday.

Expressing their condolences, his publicist issued a statement acknowledging his immense popularity among family, friends, and loyal fans.

“Big Pokey will forever be ‘The Hardest Pit In The Litter!'” the statement added, paying homage to the rapper’s debut album.

Videos circulating on social media captured the moment when Powell abruptly fell backward while gripping the microphone during his performance at the Pour09 Bar in Beaumont.

Emergency medical services were alerted shortly before midnight, as confirmed by a spokesperson from the Beaumont Police department. The exact cause of his demise has yet to be disclosed.

Powell gained prominence as a founding member of the Screwed Up Click, a highly influential hip-hop collective comprising artists from Houston.

The group played a pivotal role in popularizing the city’s distinct “chopped-and-screwed” sound, characterized by a relaxed and laid-back style achieved through pitch and tempo adjustments.

In 2005, Powell made his mark on the Billboard Hot 100 with his appearance on the Paul Wall single “Sittin Sidewayz.” Furthermore, he collaborated with Megan Thee Stallion last year on the “Southside Royalty Freestyle.”

Numerous artists, including Juice J, Slim Thug, and Lil Flip, have paid tribute to Powell, expressing their grief over the loss.

“On the down low, he was a humble mountain of a man who carried himself with dignity and earned respect. He was easy to love and difficult to hate,” shared rapper Bun B on Instagram, commemorating Big Pokey’s memory.
