The genesis of this collaborative project can be traced back to the 2023 Grammy Awards, where Madonna delivered a passionate speech and introduced Sam Smith and Kim Petras before their provocative performance of “Unholy” on the Grammy stage.

The groundbreaking performance earned the duo a Grammy for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance, marking them as the first nonbinary and transgender artists to win in this category.

The very next day, armed with their fifth Grammy Award, Sam Smith headed to a Los Angeles studio to record “Vulgar” alongside Madonna.

In addition to co-producing “Vulgar,” Sam Smith enlisted the talents of ILYA for MXM Productions, Cirkut, Omer Fedi, Ryan Tedder, Jimmy Napes, and Madonna’s vocal producer and engineer, Lauren D’elia.

This collaboration comes after Sam Smith’s earlier release, “Gloria,” which debuted in January 2023.
