In a closely watched race for Virginia’s House of Delegates, Democrat Susanna Gibson, a nurse practitioner, narrowly lost to Republican businessman David Owen by less than 1,000 votes.

Gibson’s campaign gained national attention earlier this year when it was revealed that she had hosted explicit live streams with her husband on the adult streaming website Chaturbate.

Gibson’s candidacy faced scrutiny in September after it was exposed that she had participated in more than a dozen live shows on Chaturbate, which were later archived on the website Recurbate. Despite the controversy, Gibson continued her campaign, maintaining that the leak of the explicit videos was an illegal invasion of her privacy orchestrated to undermine her candidacy. She accused her political opponents of engaging in dirty politics and condemned the leak as a sex crime intended to silence women.

Her opponent, David Owen, declined to comment on the situation, distancing himself from the controversy and focusing on his own campaign. The race intensified as the Virginia GOP distributed mailers featuring screengrabs from Gibson’s explicit live-streamed videos, sparking further controversy and public discussion.

Throughout the campaign, Gibson’s fundraising efforts surged, but her support among voters declined significantly. A Cygnal poll revealed that she trailed Owen by 49.5% to 38.9% as the election drew nearer. Despite efforts by the Gibson campaign to deflect attention from the explicit videos and focus on the issues, the controversy seemed to have a lasting impact on her candidacy.

The Virginia GOP defended their actions, claiming they were highlighting the explicit material to inform voters. The flyers warned recipients of the explicit content and urged them not to open the material if they were under 18 years old.

In the end, Gibson’s efforts to refocus the campaign on the community’s needs were not enough to secure victory. With Owen emerging victorious, the people of Virginia’s House of Delegates have chosen a new representative amidst a contentious and closely-watched election.
