Tina Turner died of natural causes on Wednesday (May 24), according to reports.
“Tina Turner, the ‘Queen of Rock’n’Roll,’ died peacefully today at the age of 83 in her home in Kusnacht near Zurich, Switzerland, after a long illness,” her publicist said in a statement.
“With her, the world loses a musical legend and a role model.”
In the 1960s, she rose to notoriety with her husband Ike Turner before overcoming his violent, abusive behavior to become a chart-topping solo performer.
Turner’s compelling live performances won her legions of followers, and she was best known for songs like “Private Dancer”, “The Best”, “What’s Love Got to Do With It” and “Proud Mary”.
Turner, who was born Anna Mae Bullock on November 26, 1939, in Nutbush, Tennessee, went on to sell more than 180 million recordings and win 12 Grammy Awards.
Turner was diagnosed with intestinal cancer in 2016 and underwent a kidney transplant the following year.
Mick Jagger, Bryan Adams, Rosario Dawson, Paloma Faith, and Naomi Campbell were among the celebrities who paid tribute to the legendary singer.
