The University of Calabar (UNICAL) has declared a substantial hike in school fees for undergraduate students, revealing a staggering 100% increase. The announcement was officially communicated through a statement released to the media in Calabar on Monday.

According to Mr. Effiong Eyo, the university’s spokesperson, the decision to raise school fees was made during an emergency meeting of the university’s Senate held last Friday. The revised fees are set to take effect starting the 2022/2023 academic session and will continue into the 2023/2024 academic sessions.

As per the newly established fee structure, students pursuing non-science courses will now be required to pay N111,000, N91,500, and N114,000 for freshers, returning students, and final-year students, respectively. Additionally, a third-party fee of N36,500, N21,500, and N21,500 will also be levied on these categories of students.

For students enrolled in science courses, the fees have been increased to N155,000, N125,000, and N148,000 for freshers, returning students, and final-year students, respectively. Similarly, they will be subject to a third-party fee of N38,500, N21,500, and N21,500.

Before the recent adjustment, average school fees for students varied depending on the department, with figures set at N64,050 for freshers, N52,050 for final-year students, and N49,500 for returning students. The university management explained that the need for the increment stems from current economic realities and the imperative to uphold the academic standards for which the institution is renowned.

This move has sparked concerns among students and parents alike, raising questions about the accessibility of quality education in the face of economic challenges. As the academic community grapples with these changes, the University of Calabar remains firm in its commitment to maintaining educational standards amid the evolving economic landscape.
